about
Words by Kieran:
There's a nice story about the trumpet solo in this song.
In 2019, Bye Louis was asked to play at March 2020's La Violette Società, which is a bimonthly showcase night at Studio 2 on Parr Street. This was a night me and Ross used to go along to together with some friends all the time, and around this time Bye Louis was transitioning from my solo project to a band. I had thought this Violette gig could be the first show for the group to perform together at.
I asked Ross if he'd fancy playing a solo at the end of the last song we had planned for this night. I thought it would be lovely to do that, given it was a night we both enjoyed and went to regularly. I knew Ross to be a really great trumpet player, but he hadn't performed since being in big bands when he was a bit younger, so I wasn't sure he'd actually be up for it.
As it went, I sent him a recording of me making trumpet sounds over the top of the end of a demo I'd recorded, and Ross picked it up straight away, making the solo completely his own on first playing. He's now an integral part of our band rather than there to play a single solo at a single night, and his part in this song really brings back memories and makes me feel happy.
Sadly, in the end that gig was never to be, as it was booked for the end of March 2020 and the covid pandemic postponed Bye Louis' Violette appearance until summer 2021, where we played their first post-covid night at Leaf, after the sad but frustratingly predictable closure of Studio 2.
But we did actually play this song at Studio 2, in the first week of March 2020. We'd been booked for another night there at shorter notice, and saw it as a dress rehearsal for the Violette gig in many ways. And as it turned out, Jack's friend Jed also came along that night after just moving to Liverpool, and that was the beginning of another set of friendships and put in motion his course into the band.
lyrics
Some people think I'm acting worse for wear.
Suffice to say, this wasn't quite unfair.
It's a beautiful dream,
You live that dream.
I live my own, jumped into the unknown.
I've got so much to give.
Love yourself!
You are worthy!
Listen to me, listen to me.
(Love yourself!)
And all the pop songs and the fairytale stories
(You are worthy!)
Are made of one version of somebody's glory,
(Listen to me.)
Possession, and freedom.
(Listen to me.)
I love you, you're here and gone.
I must admit, I was quite different then,
Not that now I am the perfect ten,
I love the room I'm in.
You're in the next room.

to me, the sound of a mellotron is instantly warm and beautiful, and the way it comes in on 'dorian loves florian' is just so, so lovely. florian would have loved it. Bye Louis

everything the manchester collective does feels so special. the opening of this grabs me in a very specific way. terrifying, but also hopeful. if you get the chance, get to a performance. Bye Louis
